Capability Maturity Model for Software, also known as SW-CMM is an assessment tool to measure a given methodology. I'm sure many of you guys know this. But, lots of folks writing for software development journals and HR staff writing help-wanted adverts apparently do not realize this.
I'm just tired of reading articles that describe the extremes of metholodies ranging from XP to CMM. XP is a process. CMM is a way to assess your implementation of your selected process. All processes, and even not-using-a-process can be considered 'CMM', though just CMM Level 0.
At my current gig, we're doing a pretty consistent SCRUM process. While it's a light-weight method that has produced very little paperwork, I think we could be assessed higher than level-0.
The Capability Maturity Model for Software (CMM or SW-CMM) is a model for judging the maturity of the software processes of an organization and for identifying the key practices that are required to increase the maturity of these processes.Anyhow, just trying to do my part to clear up confusion in the world. I hope it helped.

Hi Bob,
Glad to see that you are as prolific as ever. I swapped emails with JVZ several months back about workflow and he pointed me to drools. I return and it seems there has been some support for the workflow he required.
Anyway not why I came here to comment. I worked on contract for one of the worlds large IT solutions companies who had taken over the entire IT division of a large Telco in Australia.
Part of this deal was to achieve higher CMM levels every 18 months odd. The poor untrained development groups did not understand the distinction between process and assessment of process at all. So they spent about 15% of their working hours satisfying the mandated documentation of process (that didn't exist) so that they could hit the target and pass inspection. Endless debate about form and content of documents describing process (without the actual process being in place).
They missed the point completely (process first then assessment). I cannot remember a less productive group of development folk. Oh, but they passed to CMM2 while I was there.
in your opinion can SW-CMM be defined as a methodology for software system developement life-cycle similar to RUP or UP. Explain your answer.
