Git new SCM for the Linux kernel

Linus seems to have not chosen any of the established change-oriented SCMs (Arch, Monotone, Darcs) and have instead chosen to implement his own: Git. Does anyone know more about this Git? Would it be suitable to use for projects other than the Linux kernel? I can't even find any documentation for it... With Linus' own words: "It's not an SCM, it's a distribution and archival mechanism. I bet you could make a reasonable SCM on top of it, though." Without having looked closer at it, I also heard people calling git a "patch management system". And there are also people calling it an "SCM". :-) No, not only you. Here are two more links on git: --marko, April 22, 2005 11:06 AM
Given that he started work on it only very recently, and given that SCMs are not trivial, and given that there are some good SCMs which have had plenty of effort by tens or hundreds placed into them I'd say: Why bother considering it ? I think he wrote git because Monotone (which he seemed to like) was not up for the task performance-wise. Please keep in mind the the amount of changesets in the kernel is huge. That's why Linus made git silly but fast. --Pekka, April 26, 2005 07:35 AM
