Book: JUnit In Action
[ vmassol ] 10:16, Tuesday, 27 May 2003

I'm pleased to announce the new book I am writing with Ted Husted: JUnit In Action.

Here's the book description:

A guide to unit testing Java applications (including J2EE applications) using the JUnit framework and its extensions, this book provides techniques for solving real-world problems such as unit testing legacy applications, writing real tests for real objects, automating tests, testing in isolation, and unit testing J2EE and database applications. Using a sample-driven approach, various unit testing strategies are covered, such as how to unit test EJBs, database applications, and how to unit test JSPs, and Taglibs. Also addressed are testing strategies using freely available open source frameworks and tools, and how to unit test in isolation with Mock Objects. Testing J2EE applications by running tests from inside the container for performing integration unit tests is discussed, as is how to automate unit testing in automated builds (such as Ant and Maven) for performing continuous integration.

JUnit in Action

The book will soon be part of the Manning Early-Access Program, which will allow subscribers to get access to all the book chapters as they are ready without having to wait for the book final publication.

Vincent,

I didn't get a chance to speak to you in person at the TSSS 2003, but thanks for a couple of great sessions on Maven, Junit, and Cactus. It gave me the incentive to look at the open source technologies again. (It's been awhile since I checked in on them.) Maven and Cactus in particular looked very promising.

Also, I was browsing the pre-release site for the Junit in Action book and didn't see any mention of the source code you are using for the book. Is there any way I could grab an early release copy of the code to play around with?

Thanks,

Todd

PS: Were you successful with opening a US bank account?

Hi Todd,

A pity we didn't meet at the symposium! I am glad you liked the session and that you felt like checking out Cactus and Maven. Very cool.

I've just posted a blog entry containing the slides + links to the source: http://blogs.codehaus.org/people/vmassol/archives/000080.html

Thanks
-Vincent

PS: No, I was not able to pen a bank account there... Not enough time... :-(. And I was suprised to learn that there was no Citibank in Boston (that was the bank I wanted to open an account with).

Perhaps the book would be better if ths sample chapters were available at TheServerSide

Hi Kevin,

Yeah, that was a tough decision to make. Manning wanted to try its new MEAP programme (get the chapters as they are written). Doing both the MEAP and TSS together is difficult as MEAP subscribers are paying to get the chapters. However, once the book is finished (real soon now), I'd like to post some sample chapters on TSS.

Thanks
-Vincent

Hi Vincent,

I would like to know whether JUnit 3.8.1 is compatible with both J2ee 1.4 and JDK 1.4
